What are we reading?

Wouldn't happen to have a phone number handy would you?

To satisfy an itch for old fashioned "hard-boiled" crime fiction, I picked up five Ross Macdonald "Lew Archer" ("Harper" in the Paul Newman films) novels, and one Colin Dexter "Inspector Morse" novel.

This outstanding selection was just delivered, an early b-day gift from the Wonderful One!

American Apocalypse: The Second American Civil War by Kurt Schlichter

The set up: 2026- Democrats win control of Congress. The new Speaker of the House is an ultra-liberal woman.
2027: President Trump and VP Vance are assassinated. The new President and democrats move to consolidate their complete power determined never to lose it again. Unconstitutional decrees are made and laws are passed to eliminate any and all opposition. Socialism and Wokeism reign.
Red States loudly oppose the new government. Martial law is declared and vocal conservatives are arrested and murdered as "insurrectionists".
2028: Red states secede and form the Free States of America. The Second Civil War begins and its devastating.

The book is set some years after the war is over. The author is interviewing people from all walks of life about what happened to them and how they were affected by it. Each chapter is one person's story. Government officials, city dwellers, farmers, doctors, Priests, solders and sailors on both sides all tell their own story.

Its thought provoking, fascinating, fast paced action. It grabs you and doesn't let go. The scary part is that its all plausible.
I highly recommend it. (y)

Panama Red by Kurt Schlichter
This is book 9 in the Kelly Turnbull / People's Republic series.
This one goes back to a time when Kelly was still in the Army and working with Task Force Zulu. The very best operators running the most dangerous black ops.
This time they're up against Circe, a female operative for the People's Republic. Her goal is to clear a path for the PR's good friend, China to get a foothold in South America. She's smart, cunning and absolutely ruthless.
Kelly and the men of Zulu have their hands full in a fast paced, action heavy tale.
I highly recommend it. (y)

I'm a huge fan of Kurt Schlichter and his Kelly Turnbull novels. So I had to give this a try. Co-written with his wife, Irina Moises. This is something completely different for him. I can only describe it as a fantasy/mystery.

Lost Angeles: Silver Bullets on the Sunset Strip.
By Kurt Schlichter and Irina Moises.
Los Angeles, 1940. The ancient Greek gods of Mt. Olympus are real and still exist. They quit meddling in the affairs of humans eons ago, but over the centuries they have produced thousands of offspring with humans.
A demi-god has been kidnapped. Private detective Eddie Loud has been hired to find him. He soon runs into female PI Trixie Gamble who is working a similar case. They team up to try to solve both.
Trixie is a descendent of Cassandra and as such has the gift of prophecy. She also shares Cassandra's curse in that nobody will believe her. These visions come as quick flashes and she often blurts out words and thoughts that make absolutely no sense in 1940, but readers will instantly recognize from later in history. This sort of thing happens quite often and gets very funny at times.
During the course of their investigation, Eddie and Trixie run afoul of the Nazis, the Communists, the Mob, the FBI and the god Apollo. Its a wild ride with lots of twists, turns and humor written in a noir style. As crazy as it sounds, Kurt and Irina pull it off in a great story. (y)
