OMG I Started A Fight

The Night Rider

Professional
Every year on New Year's Day I change out the ammunition in my carry pistol.

The 2 boxes of Speer Gold Dots that I carried in 2025 got unloaded from my Glock 19 and my M&P9 and it went into my emergency stash and every so often I take some of it down to my range and shoot it.

Then I loaded up three magazines for the M&P 9 and 3 magazines for the Glock 19 and that's what I'll carry this year.

Now I'm curious, does anybody here think I'm actually dumb enough that for the next 364 days I will never unload either my M&P 9 or my Glock 19 and put range ammunition in them and go out inb the back 40 and shoot?

Because, I posted this on another form and people went crazy. They were talking about how if I never fire my guns how do I know they work?

And one guy says he buys a 50 round box of gold dots every week and shoots the ammunition that's in his gun and reloads it. So he's spending 1500 bucks a year just on self-defense ammunition? If he's buying a box a week.

I mean, how stupid can people get?

Sounds sanctimonious to me. I don't believe him there have been too many times that ammo has been scarce and you have to shoot what you can get things like gold dots sell out first. Now I would be more inclined to believe the person if they said they bought a couple cases all at one time...you know to match the lot numbers and all. Everyone knows you have to match the lot numbers or else how would one even keep track of quality control and reliability?

I have ammo that is so old, in my carry back up that it is now old enough to drive. I have never thought once about it. I just opened a SPAM can of a sweet 1974 vintage of 545x39 and it ran though fine out of a machine gun. In fact it looked better than some current offerings.

I'm a little jealous of how long you go between rotations. I cross the IL border 3-4 days/week, and CC is not allowed in IL for non-Illinois-ans (law requires me to un-chamber, remove the magazine, lock gun in glovebox or safe and place the mag in the center console along with the +1 round). Thus I have to unchamber my EDC 3-4 times/week. In order to avoid excessive setback, I need to rotate magazine loads 1/month or so. I guess that's only 100 rounds/year.

The world if full (even the gun community) of know-it-all, busy bodies, just chomping at the bit to tell you YOU'RE WRONG.

Nope, but I'll bet if you did, they would go bang 364 days later, even if being attacked by 300 lbs., meth head, biker, zombies, moonlighting as a ninja death squad.
Some peeps have internet muscle and mouth.
One of the reasons why civility is being lost in the world today. It's nigh on imposable to give someone THAT DESPERATLY NEEDS IT, a punch in the nose over the interweb. ;) :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

The only way my EDC pistols get unloaded is by shooting them. Any time I take one of my EDCs to the range, I shoot out whatever carry ammo I have loaded in it. Then switch to range ammo for the rest of my practice range trip. Then I clean the pistol and reload with fresh carry ammo until the next range session. This way I have a slow but steady rotation of my carry ammo. And every once in a while, I will also shoot out whatever carry ammo I have in my spare EDC magazine or speed strip, depending on what type of pistol I'm carrying.

People peopling!

Well you have skne telling several respected and experienced trainers that have been there don’t that and gave bad guys dirt naps they are wrong lkke I have read them criticize Kyle Lamb, Paul Howe (of Delta) Daryl Bolke John Helms (LA and Ontario PD) uiu name or m

Your critic is full of BS nobody shot of an agency swat team is running 50 rounds a week if Gold Dot or any self defense ammo. Even 50 rounds a week of standard ammo would keep you at the top tier of proficiency

And the days of having to run 209 or more rounds if your self defense ammo through your gun for “reliability testing” are king gone. Guns are made better than they ever were so I like to do 20 for POA/POI references and move on. Then I swap yjen out every 6-12 months other than the chambered round maybe sooner if I see set back happens or I am in a torrential downpour at work but I have an exposed gun in duty gear so there is that.

Sometimes you just have to laugh at folks and move on.

I've got old Corbon in a Sig P239 and my two carry 1911 .45's. I have all the confidence I need for it to function 100%. I do have some surplus 8mm Mauser made in Yugoslavia from the 1950's for a 98K I fire occasionally that does "hang fire" at times. That is the only ammunition I have ever experienced problems with. I fired some .303 from WWII in my Lee Enfield some years ago. All 60 rounds went bang as it was supposed to do.

I don't go to the range weekly to "keep sharp" either. It is expensive. I would be very surprised if police officers visit a range weekly, even monthly. Undoubtedly some do so, but they are the minority.

Have a Colt 1911 made in 1918 that works 100% with ball ammo. It is finicky about HP, and I have a series 80 Colt for carry. The 1918 was a Christmas present 66 years ago.

My primary carry pistol is a Browning HP. I keep six magazines loaded with Speer and Hornady HP.

If I were shooting 50 rounds per week for 260 per year, my hearing would be in real jeopardy, and it ain't the best now. Yes, I use protection but didn't when very young.

Personally, I don’t swap out my defensive unless I shoot it, then replenish it, it just doesn’t go bad like some think it does unless it’s not stored properly, now in a CCW gun, only conditions I see are the switch from hot to cold, possibly getting rained on also, but other then that it’s not needed. Just my thoughts, not saying it’s bad if you do it or not.

i take my EDC to the range maybe 2 times a year, i remove the magazine with the HST's, and load up all the other magazines with range ammo.

get it home, clean and lube, then reinsert the HST's that were in the gun.

if i recall, maybe once every 2 years, do i shoot the HST's, and reload with fresh ammo.

as i only buy maybe 1 box of replacements, when they are even in stock at the LGS.

Are you just driving through Illinois? Or stopping there?
I drive back and forth from Georgia to Wisconsin and back several times a year and ensure all potty breaks and refueling happens before I cross from Indiana into Illinois and I don't stop until I'm across Russell Road in Wisconsin.

Hi @The Night Rider,

Nah, you're not crazy, dumb, wasteful, or ugly. ;)

I will remove the mag and +1 when I take a class or practice with my EDC so that I can shoot cheap(-ish) range fodder. A couple times a year I will shoot that mag+1 of Gold Dot or Sig V-Crown in a training or practice session.

Yeah, I know. We're just a couple of wild and crazy guys.

"Don't be THAT guy" comes to mind. Your internet pal allowed his alligator mouth to override his hummingbird a**.

I haven't been to Illinois since I was 5 years old but I wouldn't trust that. I mean I'm sure you posted it from a legitimate source and I trust you but I wouldn't trust the Illinois cops to abide by that.
