Planning a HUNT

Im planning a Wild Boar hunt for early May. Actually Ive been planning it for a few months. The planning is just as much fun as the hunt for me. Once you pull the trigger the hunt is over; but the planning can last for months. Ive already packed and repacked my clothes once and probably will do it again.

Itll be a stalking/drive hunt. Im still not sure which gun to take. The shots will be close, usually 20 to 40 yards max. My first thought was a 12ga with slugs but I just picked up a O/U 308 that had been calling my name. Thenn its the question of optics. Im leaning towards a Red Dot because the range will be short and the targets moving (sometimes) fast

daytime or night time?
Open fields or close in brush ? or both ?
Truck, 4 wheeler or sidexside ?

all will determine what gun you're using. SBR for dismounting from sidexside or truck. who cares if its a 4 wheeler.... etc...etc....etc....

Same her, killem with grenades, explosive, dynomite, tannerite, anti tank rifles, mortars, claymores and if they could fly shoot em outta trees
 
Its a day time hunt in sometimes pretty thick forest. We'll be walking/pushing the pigs in front of us until one comes into a good shooting position. Range is never more than 40 yards, usually much closer. They have been known to charge, so Ill be taking a handgun along (probably a 454 Freedom Arms)

if woods and thicket, I'd go slugs in a semi auto shotgun or lever gun in higher caliber. charging in thicket, you may not have time to sling a rifle or shotgun and grab a pistol. use what's in your hand and lay down the law. either that or hunt with a high caliber pistol like a 10mm or .45+P in woods and rifle for open spaces.
 
Im a huge Double Rifle fan, I considered my 470 Nitro but this is a meat hunt.

Going in the opposite direction, I picked up one of the "Aug 12ga" and toyed with that for a fun hunt

You are NOT wrong those pigs can be fast. I got charged on my first Wild Boar hunt and I was hooked. I like to get close and if they charge all the better. I always bring a handgun when Im hunting in the US. It just feels natural. My "plan" if I need the handgun, is just to swing the rifle out of the way with my left hand and shoot the pistol (one handed) with my right hand.....but then we all know how "plans" can go

been charged over a dozen times and have thousands of hogs down over 15yrs of doing this.
when they turn in close and tuck their head, everything goes out the window except muscle memory, marksmanship and training.
