Should the legal age to purchase firearms be 18?

It's always been 18 for long-guns & 21 for handguns everywhere I've been.

I see a waiver for for military folks with a good behavior/discharge record for handguns.

My .02

Since 1968 it's been 18 / 21 for purchasing from Federally Licensed Dealers .

In some states, there are legal mechanisms outside of FFL for under 21 to lawfully possess handguns .

Interesting. I can't state what the letter of the law (GCA '68) at that time was, but somewhere around 1975 I purchased at least TWO handguns at the ripe ol' age of 19 from an FFL. Filled out the forms. Paid my money. Left with the guns. I hope they don't dig the guy up and prosecute him. Wouldn't put it past 'em, however.

Ya. How can you imagine that he/she is a Fed? We all know they don't do such things. No. Never. We're just being paranoid.

I used to think 18 was fine. Kids of today? Uh, I have questions.
let's not forget, that kids of yore had responsibilities, like maybe a job, maybe saving for college or trade school, or a car. many worked, there were no cell phone or smart phones or video games unless an arcade had them.

parents wanted to know where the kids were...

parents in most cases did not coddle them.

many parents were strict, and the teens many times got punished.

over the generations, parents became absent, kids were known as "latch-key", with no supervision

kids were allowed to do whatever they wanted, with no repercussions

parents in due time, allowed thier kids to continue living at home for god knows, like into thier 40's..???

kids no longer learnt responsibilities, or owning up to thier faults, but found it easier to deny everything for someone else to take the blame.

i'd not want anyone under the age of 26 to buy a gun, let alone at the age of 21.

Go hang out on a college campus for a couple of hours to gain some perspective. They are using AI to write their term papers. Looking for the easy way without responsibility as someone earlier said; lacking critical thinking which has to be a prerequisite to firearm ownership. No way, Jose!

When I joined the Army I was not 18... I was 16! Yes I was under age. After all the training the Army gave me as an infantryman I still was not prepared to handle a weapon. The day I became prepared and mentally capable of putting all that training to use was when I sighted in on another human being and pulled the trigger, by the way it was a female with a satchel. All the training in the world doesn't prepare a person.

Well, when a member especially a new one comes on asking very direct questions about assault rifles and now if you should be 18 or older to own guns, their either a troll or big brother……..
Dude, that is just a cliche stereotype of a "troll." Have you ever considered some people actually like to engage in high level discussion surrounding these topics and are feel a connection to them?

Dude...its not what you say, or think...

its very often connected to someone that is new, starting off right away with a subject known to cause all sorts of chaos.

people that actually "like to engage in a discussion" as you say, often start off building up thier reputation first....like maybe at the very least 100 messages or so.

you might not be message board savvy.

What does everyone think?

I believe so.
So this above was your post, referring to the question you posted as a title. Perhaps had you prefaced it a bit with some data, folks might have understood better. I know, that for some reason, folks think the least amount of words in a post results in the most understanding - never gonna happen.

And yes, I know walls of text, especially with zero punctuation or paragraphs suck just as bad the other way.

As an example…

“I’ll be turning 18 next month (or I turned 18 this year) and have been reviewing the laws in my State as it regards 18 years olds buying handguns from a dealer. It is currently illegal in my State. How do some of you who have been around a while feel about 18 year olds buying guns?”

I suspect something like that might have solicited less charged responses…

I make no claim to being perfect in spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc. However, I did spend a good portion of my life teaching others how to communicate.
