165 Grain 40 S&W Is It Dead?

Ammoseek says no:

Seems like all the articles concerning 40 S&W show 140/180 round performance.
That's odd. 165 and 180 gr 40S&W is the most popular, widely used, carried, and talked about. I'm not sure what articles you are referring to and where you've been looking.

I only carry and shoot 180 gr 40S&W. I'm not interested in the lighter bullets. I carry 180 gr Gold Dot or 175 gr Federal Syntech Defense in my EDC.

40 is a middle weight, a compromise between a full power cartridge and a "Special".
I carried 40 as a service round, on, and off duty. I shot it in both IPSC and USPSA, from my duty gear, shooting duty equivalent FMJ ammo, and i shot more than our SRT(see SWAT) team.
Given the choice, and being unencumbered by department regulations, I'd pick 10mm over 40, but if I had no other choice, I wouldn't feel under armed carrying a 40.
But, that's just me......

What does a 10mm do that 40s&w can't do when it comes to defensive against humans? If it comes to hunting with hardcast, where greater penetration is required, then I agree that 10mm is better than 40s&w in that respect. When it comes to conceal carry, size, weight, price of ammo, and defense against two legged predators, I don't see how 10mm is better other than it's the flavor of the month that's on the bandwagon that everyone suddenly wants to jump on. I'm genuinely curious because I don't think 10mm defensive ammo does anything at all better or is better at quick incapacitation of a human being in anyway, shape, or form than a 40s&w.

This doesn't apply to you @USMC6094, but I also don't understand how many of the same people who bash 40s&w as being too snappy, hard to make follow up shots, and too expensive compared to 9mm will rave about and have now problem with the more expensive and snappier 10mm cartridge.

Well , there is a distinction .

9mm is very popular in all size of pistols , notably the very popular class of very small & light , quasi pocket sized .

10mm is primarily in full size -ish guns , with the G29 being the small end of the spectrum .
