Prayers to those affected. I don’t watch too much of the news on these things except for the press conference by those there at the scene briefing. My .02 is that news commentators are essentially paid political actors. They assume and twist narratives to fit their political and ideological beliefs.
How would a background check turn this up if not disclosed on an application? There's no "central registry" of medical records they could check (thankfully).
For at least four, their best is behind them.

Shane Tamura suffered from CTE. For some reason he blamed the NFL. But CTE is is caused by sub-standard equipment and lousy coaching. Still, with mental issues he should not have been allowed to purchase a firearm in Nevada and drive to New York. Now Hochul and others are calling for a nation wide "assault" weapons ban. Tragic situation all around.

It’s on the 4473 and the FBI, who conducts the BGC, certainly has access to records from the LVPD, who issued 2 protective orders against him. Nevada has red flag laws too.
How are we sure he had been diagnosed with any mental issues before receiving a CWP, and how would we be sure that they were properly disclosed by the applicant?
People can lie on the 4473, and not every protective order is entered in NICS. The FBI is only doing a NICS check + fingerprint ID verification - nothing more.

I could spend ten minutes explaining to you why you’re wrong, but I don’t feel like it. I’ll give you a hint though. Have your wife get a restraining order against you and then go do a BGC via NICS at your local gun store and tell us how it went.
That only works IF the restraining order is entered into the system (same with domestic violence convictions).

Notice how much more attention the media pay to this than the 11 stabbed in Michigan? Mental illness is definitely an issue in these things (since sane people do not go around shooting people). Simple fact is today we have way fewer than 1/2 the inpatient psych beds than we did in the 50’s, while our population is 2-2 1/2 times what is was. Given that the % of people with serious mental illness in the general population is the same (and an argument could be made that it’s actually higher) we are way short on inpatient care. Given many folks with mental health problems can get treatment and function just fine, there IS a percentage that are, frankly, dangerous to themselves and others. These folks should be institutionalized for their own sake and society in general.
