Another trip to the range with the HellCat Pro

Good point. I purchased my HC Pro for the singular purpose of carry. Fortunately I haven't been disappointed.

Ok . Slightly rephrasing my intended inquiry :

What general expectations of handling , and shooting in realistic context do you consider acceptable / desireable for " purpose of carry " . ( For the moment , the subject is already established with 9mm , and caliber wars temporarily suspended .)

My expectations for a handgun the size of the HellCat is from concealment putting 2 rounds on target (A zone) in 2 seconds target at 10 yards. Has to be optic ready (old eyes) and able to be concealed with only an untucked shirt. Zero printing appendix carry. I am not a big guy 5’9” 170 pounds. I like the fact the HellCat has 15 rds in a flush fit magazine allowing for a full grip no pinky finger hanging off. That helps a lot with recoil control. For me the HellCat has proven it’s accurate enough all the way out to 100 yards. If printing wasn’t a concern I would have opted for a little larger handgun. And my expectations would change a bit. Faster shots 10 rds on target in 5 seconds A zone hits and 2rds in the A zone in 1.5 seconds from concealment target at 10 yards. With an even smaller gun my expectations would change again allowing for slower accurate shots. Because it’s harder to control. Or it is for me. A handgun chambered in 9mm doesn’t bother me when I have 15 rds without a mag change. Bullet technology has come a long way. And now unlike the 80’s a 9mm is able to expand and still reach vitals. With things being the way they are I really do think you need more than 5 rounds and a reload. I live in a small town but crime happens here also not as often as in the big cities. I’m retired but I work a part time job as a fuel clerk. I had a gang banger point a gun at me. I’m behind bullet resistance glass and walls. I flipped him off and had a few choice words for him. If I had been outside the kiosk I would have handled it differently. More than likely there would have been a gunfight that night. I would had made it a priority to make it home to my family **** on the job. That’s the thing about needing a gun you never know where you will be when you need it. All you can do is carry the biggest gun you can conceal and shoot quickly and accurately. Hope I explained my expectations more clearly that I did in my last post.

For a gun purchased as a carry gun I want to draw and rapid fire a magazine at 7 then 10yrds that stays within the 8 ring. This is the expectation for a gun I designate as a carry gun. All rounds on the target but also many rounds quickly on target. I am of the opinion multiple rounds on target is the most effective way of stopping a threat.

Keep shooting until they are no longer a threat.

Thanks Condition 1 , and Southtex .

My point l was feeling out , was that the " Before " met those .
Not everyone has the need for a smaller gun than a Glock 19 but I do and that’s what I was wanting to point out. A smaller gun is harder to control thus you aren’t going to be able to shoot it as fast and be accurate. Me hitting a Coke can at a 100 yards is well aimed and very good trigger control. I could hit center mass at 100 yards a little quicker than I can a Coke can. I had a Keltec PF9 that I carried in my pocket when I ran to town to pick up a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk. I’d be lucky to hit a car at 100 yards with it. But my needs and expectations changed at that time. Is the HellCat the greatest handgun of all time nope but it is a good well built accurate pistol. Now Bigfoot44 tell us your wants and expectations of a carry gun.

I'm pretty convinced the BG2.0 is "enough" gun for 99% of people and self defense encounters. I won't **** on anyone for carrying more, I often do but realistically if you need more than 12rds of .380acp and shooting past 7yds you're going to have a real problem justifying self defense.

So logically I think it follows that if you're carrying a modern micro 9mm like a hellcat, shield or p365, you're also plenty well armed.

Ok , most of my inclinations have come up here , and other forums , so l'm try to not gratitously reignite controversies .

To get out of the way , of recently year or so , G27 w/ G23 mag . For a while before that , G22 . ( I'm late coming to .40 ) . For a cpl years before that , couldn't shake myself away from 2 inch Round Butt K Frames . A couple of new aquisitions , probably to be added in , but my compulsive workaholic lifestyle interferes .

My general inclination is carry large -ish . Back in '80s , flirted with tiny BUGs , but my experiences sunk in , and l realigned .

My general inclination leans into accurate , and resultant distance capabilities . I have admitted biased hatred of .380 . Either .38 +P and up , or if going smaller on purpose , .32 .

Being vague for moment , because having been in crossfire of epic runaway discussions over this , l have a certian yardstick of group size . Doing it 25 yd is goal , for " all around , do everything best practices . Doing it at , at least 15 yds is good for " category #2 " . Yeah , l have categories .
[ deleted pargraph for rambling side track ]

Yeah , l appreciate Micro 9 , had the O.G. 20 -ish yr ago . Breakthrough in sub 16 oz power , even if it rated my category #2 . When first tried out a Shield , l was " OMG , this thing shoots as well as an average full size 9mn " . I thought enough of them to get one for my daughter .

Opps , premature finger slip . Will conclude as an edit .

Arrg ! Too slow , and time limit expired to add as " edit " , and too frustrated to try to directly replicate the second part of book length .

Or was l already too wordy , and one sentence answer called for instead ?

Cool, like I’ve posted before I’m just not a DA revolver guy. Tried a bunch of time but nope. My last DA escapade was the S&W 69 in 44mag. I’ve always liked the 44mag cartridge. Hot 44spl loads was my carry ammo. That did not last long. Also with revolvers not being optic ready had a lot to do with that.
Thanks for the conversation.

As much as I liked my HCP. I personally realized that it was to small even with a 17 round magazine (which for me a range toy). Some people think I’m nuts for saying this but I carry compact size (usually 4”barrel) and occasionally do a full size because of my hands been like mits. Yes I did have a Glock 43X when I started shootin and just didn’t work well.

I understand the HellCat Pro to me isn’t a Micro because of its size. It fits somewhere between a compact and a sub. I would rather carry a compact they are easier to manage. But they are a bit too large to conceal.

I conceal about 3 or 4 different compact pistols in 3 different calibers. I thought the HCP would be my go to CCL gun but realized the more I shot it the more it was to small for my hands.

It’s really snappy and I’m struggling with shooting it as quickly as I want but that’s because if the arthritis in my hands. Sucks to get old but it better than the alternative. 😖

The comparison just struck me .

Shooting DA Revolver is like playing Rhythm Guitar .

At the most basic , it's very simple . True competence , up to thr ever elusive mastery n is a whole 'nuther thing .

Totally understand. The HellCat wasn’t on my radar until I got to try it. I agree on the size making or breaking a gun if it to small it hard to control to large and it’s hard to conceal.

I always tell people it’s how they dress when it comes to concealing a firearm. The big part is not saying you have it
