Fail to Fire - Spfld 911 .380

Disassembled, cleaned the firing pin hole. Had a little dirt, not much. Also cut two coils off the firing pin spring, reducing its length from 30mm to 29mm, a 3% reduction (photo only shows 1 coil, but I ended up taking 2 off).

As originally made, the pin works merely by inertia; it's too short to make direct contact from the hammer to the primer. Photo doesn't show this, as the back plate that secures the pin adds distance.

I'm traveling this week, when I return I'll test it and let you know if this gives better primer hits.

Bear, Anni, and BBob, I think the Spfld 911 was a copy of the Sig P238. I've heard some parts interchange. Main difference is 911 has an alum alloy frame, and P238 is steel. I chose 911 for that reason, to go as light as possible.

Recall I shortened the firing pin "hold off" spring by 3% (1mm) and cleaned the firing pin channel. Went to the range w slightly newer ammo, only 25-30 yrs old. Had 2 ftf out of 25 rnds!

In the pic, the ftf rounds are on top, and good fired cases below. Notice the ftf rounds have shallow, off center firing pin hits.

I'm going to cut the spring by another 3% (1mm) for a total reduction of 6%, but want to hear what the board thinks first.

I’m no expert, but I’m not sure what shortening the spring will do for you. Those all look like pretty good hits to me. I’d go out and buy a couple boxes of new ammo and give it a try. I haven’t had any issues with my 911, but then I’m not using decades old ammo with it either.

Why won't you buy new ammo?

Look at the picture,
The FTF are the top two. Hits are off center and light.
The shells that fire are below, and show deeper strikes.

The firing pin hits should be consistent.
Hard primers on that old ammo, plus shorting the spring will not make the hits dead center no matter how much you remove, lots of guns have the off center hits, just sayin
