Based on the information available as of July 3, 2025, the US Congress has passed the "One Big Beautiful Bill" (also known as H.R. 1), which includes provisions impacting the regulation of suppressors, short-barreled rifles (SBRs), and short-barreled shotguns (SBSs).

Key Changes:
  • Elimination of NFA Tax: The bill eliminates the $200 tax stamp requirement associated with purchasing or manufacturing suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, and Any Other Weapons (AOWs) under the National Firearms Act (NFA).
  • Continued NFA Regulation: While the tax is eliminated, the regulatory framework of the NFA concerning these items remains in place. This means individuals still need to register these items with the ATF and adhere to associated recordkeeping requirements.
  • Background Checks Remain: These items will still be subject to background checks when purchased from a licensed dealer, as per the Gun Control Act of 1968.
Important Notes:
  • This legislation is heading to the President's desk for signing, where it is expected to become law.
  • Gun rights organizations, like Gun Owners of America (GOA), are planning a lawsuit to challenge the remaining NFA regulations, arguing that the registration scheme is unconstitutional without the tax provision.
  • Earlier versions of the bill proposed removing suppressors entirely from the NFA, which did not pass the Senate.
In summary, the most significant change brought by this bill is the elimination of the $200 NFA tax stamp for suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs. However, other NFA regulations, including the requirement for registration and background checks, will continue to apply.

Here’s what someone else posted on another board. Sounds like January 1st is when it will take effect. I’m sure we’ll hear more as time goes by.

(d) Effective Date.--The amendments made by this section shall apply to calendar quarters beginning more than 90 days after the date of the enactment of this Act.

The next calendar quarter beginning more than 90 days after enactment (today) starts on Jan 1 is how I read it. We missed Oct 1 by a few days.”

Hopefully, another bill will go through that takes all the items of interest off the NFA.

Tax free wont take place until Jan 1 2026, silencershop has told its dealers, and now capitol Armory is also advising the same.

Some mfg’s and such are adapting with 200 dollar rebates, since they know the market is going to slow to a crawl. Others are advising that you should buy now to beat the “rush”. My additional advice is to go out and get your EFT electronic finger prints done (not silencershop) but where you actually gat the EFT file, that speeds things up tremendously.
