Henderson PD adopts Echelons

From the article:

“HPD noted that the Echelon’s modular grip system and customizable ergonomics contributed to improved performance, particularly among less-experienced shooters, while still delivering strong results for advanced personnel. Notably, for the first time in the department’s history, every officer across both Police and Corrections divisions passed handgun qualification on their first attempt.”

The Echelon is no better or worse than dozens of plastic wonders out there.
Not impressed. Its like saying XX PD chose brand Xx..
its a quality pistol, but no better or worse than many others.
Like buying a normal quality 4 door sedan.
They all fit the bill.

Yawn
Well since Gelhaus is a rangemaster at Gunsite AND wrote the Gunsite pistol optics curriculum and he evaluated the gun I would trust the Echelon more than any of the how many Gen 3 Glocks we have?

You can run Gunsite with any of the high quality pistols on the market now. Echelon is just one of many.
Its good, but no better than a Sig, HK, CZ or Glock.
Good for Echelon. Welcome to the everyday club. Glad you made it.

I totally agree.

Each department from local to federal government will pick what “they” think is right. Some departments will say “here’s your allowance and go find it”. Like each one of us in this form, we all like what we like because of what ever reason. I’m not going to pound everyone for a XDm or M&P because I think it’s the greatest invention since the 1911.

Echelon is late to the party.
While its a nice pistol, many gun owners already have similar.
If I didnt have many like it, maybe It could find a stable. Nothing against the gun. Buyers looking for reliable will find it appealing like Sig, CZ, HK, FN, Glock and others.
Im just not going to jump for joy when it got chosen for a PD. That should be every gun makers goal for longevity.

You would be surprised how many “non firearm/gun people” get out in charge of firearms programs at agencies and have zero clue/knowledge of what makes a gun good.

While it seems some have made decent choices LAPD the Border
Patrol and the Mississippi Highway Patrol have always had good firearms programs and people in charge, (Glocks M&P Eschelon LAPD with the FN509 etc) I remember many that were the lowest bidder alone.

The Federal Bureau of Orisons went with Ruger P89 DAO for Christ sake
While I like tevokvers that P89 DAO was anythjng but a revikver (I am waiting for the I am die compensation ads anyway now)

I am just glad we have the array of options we have now, I am old enough to remember the options where a K L or N frame S&W Ruger or Colt wheelgun or a 1911 (you had to send off for work) Browning Hi power or S&W 39/59 as Beretta and the Sig/Browning BDA was just getting noticed in the early 1980’s

I have a tendency to check out what law enforcement has when I see them fill up or out (uniformed kind) and about.

Oddly enough I got talking to the county deputy about firearms. The county I live in “doesn’t” go with 1 certain brand or another but let them pick. The deputy actually kept eye balling up my M&P M2.0 10MM (I think I had a better setup) and might have sold him on M&P.

Also I check gunbroker often enough and I do see police trade-in’s. I saw a Glock G22 just the other day along with a XDm and M&P’s. Personally it’s part of the job to have one.

Last but not least the 1911 is still been used in some of the military roles still.

When Glock came on the scene their goal was to capture the American CIVILIAN market because that's where the profit is. To get there they wanted to get those guns into as many LEO holsters as possible, which would lead civilians wo want them. They deeply discounted them to LE and even gave a lot of them to LE leaders. And put girls from a topless bar on the marketing program. It worked.

The government market is where the money is actually at. Yes a lot of us see what the government has and tend to lean that way. I was a sucker for Glock when I started shooting but realized that there’s more out there than Glock. Yes I like the XDm lineup a little more than the M&P lineup at the moment but way than any Glock. Honestly I still say that if you shot 1 Glock you shot them all. Yes I understand that the polymer market is pretty much the same thing and it’s made by different brands (and supported manufacturers).

Here’s 4 examples of 4 different firearms in my collection. Yes I shoot all 4 of them basically the same thing just built a little different.

While I get the issue and standardized benefits I wish all departments allowed personally owned firearms or give a choice of a couple different models.

As far as the Glocl 40 cals there are a ton if them still since the 49 cal has fell from popularity.

However if you get one you WILL HAVE TO replace the locking block as agencies and Officers are notoriously famous for not changing recoil springs or conducting inspections in

On anythjng (especially cracks in the locking block) until they break. And that is a fail point on the 40 cal Glocks.

The Gen 5 might be a little more forgiving as the slide is thicker and heavier but most cops don’t take care of their gear (generally) and armorers can be lazy as well as they want to go to lunch!

I say gbis as I have seen this with 40 cal because I saw it at FLETC which took care of the guns as they should have been for the most part and for a couple decades a ton of Feds ran Glock 22/24’s Marshals, FBI Capital Police etc

So why deals can be had so your research and add a few parts to the price you will need.

I do agree departments should allow individual firearms but they also get a “bulk” deal or have a few armors to service a fleet. As a civilian shooter we have a choice of weapons that we like in situations.
