How to Use Iron Sights

Hi,

Thanks for sharing. That's a good basic overview and explanation of iron sights. All of my pistols do not use the same sight picture. Some are center mass (EDC) while others need a 6 o'clock hold (target).

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

I haven’t seen a sight picture like this (clearly in focus) for 20+ years!. I prefer combat hold on my pistol open iron sights. With a blurry front sight and unable to see if there’s equal daylight on both sides of the front sight, so much faster just to put that front sight dot on the target POA and try to get the equal height before the trigger squeeze. But I only shoot pistols, so combat hold is feasible.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, as a wearer of progressive bifocals, the ability to use optics and be target focused is a game changer for my accuracy and speed. So, I'm all in. Optics on every firearm I own. Do I need to keep up with battery rotation? Yes. Do I need to practice with iron sights? Yes.

This is a great article and anyone who desires to be proficient with rifles and/or pistols should know how to use - and regularly practice with - open (iron) sights.

I've always loved this line from the film Quigley Down Under and while it's not apples to apples, I think it reflects how (some) purists think I'm not really shooting because I use red dot optics. It's not that I don't have "much use" for iron sights - everyone does - but after becoming proficient with red dot optics, the need for me to rely on open/iron sights is far less now than before.

Everyone's mileage may vary and I'm in awe of shooters who can hit a plate at distance (200+ yards) using irons. Heck, I can't even see the dang plate at that distance without magnification lol.

This ^^^^ pretty much tells the tale. Good job, Sir!

Technology advances in every aspect of life. everything we do now has advanced in technology.
HVAC is wonderful, along with advances in transportation, appliances, homes, cars and all walks of life.
folks love to complain about "irons vs dots" but don't have a qualm about all other advances in life.
irons exist because like all technology, in 1886, civilization didn't have the means to go to the moon or fly at mach 2.5.

so get off your high horse and recognize the fact that you can have an MRI to diagnose your medical issues, but still complain about a red dot. Red dots are a natural progression for firearms with technology.

Irons are relevant. always have, always will.
If you complain about your irons vs dots, then go back to a wood burning stove for heat/cooking and non-refrigeration to go with your "red dot" mentality.
Like an Ice Chest full of beer and sandwiches on a camping trip, irons will be needed, but so will the camper with AC/Heat, and technology to keep you comfortable.

You're not Amish. Quit acting like one :cautious:

That's my high horse.........................

1) true, we live in a country where we have people that invent things....and improve on them very often.

2) i cannot even get up on a high horse, i am old and fragile, i might break a hip on the way down

3) yes, iron sights will alway be relevant..unlike Rosie O'Donnell or Ellen Dengeress.

4) i own a very old house, a wooden stove might burn it down

5) i don't go camping in the cold, and i don't go camping in the heat...in fact...i just don't go camping....

6) i dunno.....i cannot build furniture...maybe i ain't Amish....

7) don't break a hip on the fall down off that critter.

100% except for the camping part. I did way more than my share of "camping" while in the Marine Corps and the Army. And going through the Cub Scout/Boy Scout years with my son. My type of camping these days is opening the curtains at the Hilton and enjoying the concrete jungle view. And room service.
