Hunting with an 18.5" Barrel Shotgun?

I have a 590 with a 20 inch barrel and ghost ring sights, but I had a gunsmith thread the barrel for choke tubes. I think the choke is more important than the barrel length. I love the ghost rings and I use a Xtra full tube for turkey hunting. I've taken 3 turkeys with it.

That's my kinda shottie, right there! One can do a heckovalot with that with practice. Will it take spare barrels?

Do Not Start Turkey Hunting! It is a habit that is impossibke to break. I tell people that deer hunting gets in your blood. Turkey hunting stirs the soul. There is something about that first gobble on a cool, crisp, spring morning. Gives me chills just thinking about it.

Most turkey guns have shorter barrels since they are primarily used in thee woods. An 18 or 20 inch barrel is much easier to get thru thickets than a 28 inch barrel.
Mine has a 20 inch barrel and patterns like a rifle to 40 yards and is still lethal at 60+ yards using a Kicks Gobblin Thunder choke tube and Winchester #5 Longbeard XR shells. I've not dipped my toe into the TSS pool yet.

Is your Bbl threaded for Choke Tubes, or cylinder bore ?
This. If it’ll take a Turkey choke you’re good with the right ammo. It it’s cylinder bored (and a LOT) of SD shotguns are, then you’ll need a different shotgun or at least another barrel

I got enough push back earlier in the thread, l reached out to some of my dedicated Turkey friends , in case l had a brain fart and overlooked something .

The concensus was to the effect of ' Yeah, you " could " , but you'd have to get That Close ( pointing to objects 15 to 20 yards away).'

Which is demonstrably false. Barrel length has almost nothing to do with maximum effective range. And even if you were to assume it did, it could only increase your range by the difference of the lengths of the barrels. So, what, 6-10”.

Physics man.

Have you patterned your barrel?

If not—you don’t know what you don’t know.

It wasn't in relation to the Bbl length , it was in relation to cylinder choke . I should have been more explicit .

As many know, dedicated Turkey specific guns / Bbls are commonly short on purpose ( Albeit 20- 22 in more often than 18 ) . Makes sense . Smoothness of swing not an issue , and more compact handling in a blind is a plus .
