Shots fired at correspondents dinner

Hi,

This video makes it look like the perp ran full bore through the metal detector and kept going.

I don't know, you'd think somebody would've knocked him down.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

I've become my Father. News anchor "They said he had a LONG GUN, a handgun and knives on him" Me, screaming at the TV " It was a SHOTGUN, you moron!". Right after this happened, one of the journalists they were talking to made the comment "And they said they heard a silencer pop off". Me: "WTHF?!?!?! Are your people REALLY THAT STUPID?!?!?!" Holy crap! Merry Christmas! Where's the Tylenol?!

Yeah, they had their guard down for him to reach this level.

Has anyone ever heard a shot ring? They keep saying "when the shots rang out".
It's a "figure of speech" that's been commonly used for over 200 yrs.

The phrase "shots rang out" has been used to describe the sudden start of gunfire for over 250 years, with its roots in descriptions of the American Revolutionary War.
  • 18th Century Origins: The phrase is deeply tied to the opening engagement of the American Revolution on April 19, 1775, at Lexington and Concord. Historical accounts, reenactments, and historical analyses regularly state that as tension peaked between British troops and colonial militia, "a shot rang out" or "shots rang out".
That being said....

And that video is exactly why I don't feel safe being forcibly disarmed to enter an event becuase they have armed guards and metal detectors.
Now imagine that was several bad guys attempting to do harm. Imagine if those guys had any kind of training

It’s why I avoid crowds like that to begin with. I am no match for several trained bad guys implementing a planned assassination or mass shooting event, whether I’m armed or not, which I have no trouble admitting.

While I don’t fault anyone their right to possess/carry firearms for self protection, I’m not sure how a few dozen “carriers” drawing and shooting amongst a packed in crowd of 2600 would end. I choose not to ever find out.

I carry to protect myself and loved ones where my/our situational awareness may have been off and someone wanted to do us ill will. I prepared for home defense for the same reason. There are many variables I can control to ensure that safety.

I worked many protection details over the years and received a lot of training. From what I see in the video, the layered concentric rings of security at the event worked as they should have. He never got anywhere near the protectees.

You can never completely eliminate the threat in a free society where leaders are visible and in contact with the public. You would have to lock the principal in a bunker with no windows.

The problem I see here is the venue, a ballrom in a hotel that remains open for business with guests coming and going during the event. Another good reason for building the secure ballroom on White House grounds.
