So, Fellow Floridians... how's open carry going for you?

You know, it's almost been a month since Florida passed its open carry law. The Democrats screamed and yelled about how everyone would be walking around with guns and shoot outs in the streets, stores, everywhere, every day.

I haven't seen one person with an open carry. I asked the wife, family, and friends, no one has seen anyone walking around the streets, in stores, anywhere with a visible gun. And to top it off, according to FDLE, this month is set to become the lowest on person crime in Florida in over 10 years.

How's it going for some of you fellow Floridians... you guys, or girls, having any major shoot outs in the streets?

Personally, I think the biggest benefit to an “open carry” allowed law is that someone who bends over or reaches up and inadvertently exposes their “concealed” EDC, or prints more than they thought they were, cannot be charged for “openly carrying” as some folks have had to deal with in the past (especially in bluer States and cities).

A cc pistol that is briefly displayed has not been a violation in Florida for years unless it is done in a threatening manner not necessary for self defense.. And open carry while going to and from fishing or hunting has always been legal.

The change in the law with respect to open carry will have unknown and interesting ramifications. Property owners and managers can still prohibit carrying on their premises but signage does not have force of law unless it is one of the 15 specific places where carrying a firearm is prohibited by law. With CC, they don't know what they don't know.

We are seeing a lot of folks moving to Florida from the communist states who are bringing their ideas with them. Florida is firmly red right now but who knows what anti-gun political skullduggery will emerge in the future. I am watching developments with interest.

People say this every time open carry is passed.. "There will be gunfights in the street, it'll be like the old west" And it never happens. I think that the majority of people are smart enough NOT to open carry.
Yes there was much "there will be blood running in the streets" hand wringing when Florida implemented its concealed carry law 40 years ago. But everyone with a CWFL license had a background check. Now with no license and background check required and open carry, and now a judge has ruled 18 year olds can carry, there are new dynamics in play for anti gunners to seize upon.

Here in TX, I see it every now and then out in farm and ranch country. It is absolutely no big deal for farmers and ranchers to open carry on their own land. On occasion I might see those farmers open carrying in the small farm or ranch towns, fueling up their trucks, the feed store, or farm and ranch stores. No one bats an eye or cares. But I don't see any of that in the city.

Well, I think as far as open carry being legal here in Florida, it just allows more options. Most people won't open carry, I won't. However, instead of being stuck with an IWB holster option, now OWB covered is an option. I usually do that during the cooler months when a jacket and some layering is required. Now, if I so choose, I can carry my EDC in an OWB covered and not worry about printing as much.

Hi,

Last one i seen open carry had a huge gun, don't even know what it was....

AGREED... I was born and raised in Florida. Not liking the change myself, hardly any more greenery. I keep saying Florida is full, stop coming.

And interesting that you said that because many Floridians are moving to the mountains, to get away from what Florida may become. The wife for the first time ever has suggested we move to the mountains after we pay off our house, in 4 years... something I wanted to do when I retired 9 years ago.

We are in the country in the Florida Panhandle but in the last couple years we have seen runaway development out here. We bought here in the middle of nowhere 35 years ago but urban sprawl is coming to nowhere. At the grandkids school dropoff and pickup lines I am seeing more and more Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes and fewer pickup trucks. New housing development is rampant which is good for the tax base and local economy but the strain on infrastructure is painful. A new chain restaurant opens in the nearby town almost monthly. I get letters weekly from developers wanting to buy my farm land. The old ways of farming and ranching will be mostly gone in a generation. It saddens me for my grandkids.
