Because they hurt and it's not illegal to conceal.

You're right. California does not allow shipment of chemical irritants. Other states don't also.

And, yeah, the Byrna is probably bigger than my Hellcat. I know it's bigger than my wife's mini-revolver. Maybe it won't make a hole as big as my .44mag, either.

In America, you could probably discharge an actual firearm and not go to jail. But not in California. Right or wrong, you're automatically going for a ride. A guy breaks into your car and you can't shoot him. With a firearm, anyway. But i can shoot this farther than i can throw a knife. And i can use it before i let the dog go.
