Wilson Combat Mag Question

Bear103

So I purchased a NIB 10 round WC mag for my 9mm Operator. It does not want to drop free after I rack the slide back. Everything is nice and oiled. It feels like is snug in the gun for some reason. The two OEM mags no issues. And if you ever experience that? Wilson makes good stuff so not knocking on them.

Honestly, I never had much luck with there mags, on my Kimber and RO Operator I use Kimber Kim-Pro TAC Mag 9mm mags, they work fine for me.

many of my mags are indeed WIlson Combat, or NightHawk, both excellent brands for the money.

what i have found on mine mostly out of the box, is that there may be a bit of preservative oil or machine oil on them, that may be causing this issue when it happened to me.

so, a rag with Simple Green that i had on hand, and a wipe down, and they popped out of the mag well like a young stud being told he was gonna be a daddy....

i also wipe down all my mags with a clean rag after every range visit, to remove any carbon blow by.

then too, i keep the magewell itself very clean after each range visit.

all my mags are for 45 ACP

Does it also do this when the magazine is empty, in battery or slide locked? Is the magazine also difficult to insert, in battery or slide locked? You might have to dress the magazine catch channel. My Garrison came with a raised horizontal ridge in the channel, probably stainless casting or MIM. Easy to sand the channel down with 600grit, then finely polish with finer black oxide sandpaper or metal polish. Mine needed dressing on the button side which didn't take much effort. Here's two from an accomplished 1911 smith:

Another thought SA uses a strong magazine catch spring. I couldn't get a magazine to drop freely w/o changing my grip and making sure I was fully pressing the button. I bought an assortment of Wolff springs which made the SA mag catch much easier to press w/o changing my grip.

Wilson does make good magazines (heavy gauge metal), but it could be out of spec. Contact Wilson for their suggestions.

Yeah I used a rem oil wipe on the mags. Whatever the issue is it appears to happen from the mag release up towards the the top of the frame. It also appears to be towards the rear of the frame by where the tigger bow and disconnecter engage. I’ve pulled that and all appears fine. And again only this mag. I’ll have to fiddle with it some more and see if I can find out where and why it may be rubbing.

Yeah it’s a little difficult to insert empty mag. Rack the slide back and I ensure I press the mag release all the way and it sticks in there. If I manually lock the slide back it’s interment.

Have you tried taking the slide out of the equation? Remove the slide and see if the magazine inserts and drops freely from the frame whether loaded or unloaded.
Yep just pulled the mag release from the frame. It drops smoothly from the frame with the slide off and on. Me thinks it’s the angle of the mag catch the engages the slot in the magazine or the spring tension. Not feeling any burs on the release or catch.

If it's loaded the top round may be moving forward. Otherwise ?????

I tried the Wilson ETM 10 round magazines in my 9mm Ronin and it choked on them badly. Would not feed and you couldn't insert one all the way with a full 10 rounds and the slide closed. It would stop just short of latching.

I sold them unused and got myself a Tripp Cobra 10 rounder; now all is good. My Ronin loves the Wilson flush base 9 round 920 mags though.

Yeah kinda stumped the mag release spring is wicked stiff even with clp and multiple engagements but again also ejects the OEM mags like a bad habit. Monday may warrant a call to Wilson and see what they say. I would still buy their products even with this weird thing going on.

not a 1911 person, but did have a similar issue on some ar10 metal mags of a certain brand. i found the mag catch slot wasn't in the same numeric location. it was just enough lower to cause binding loaded and not w/ bolt closed.

compare1's that do work and those that don't to see if the cut's angle, dimensions and location are in the exact same place.

Is there any contact between the magazine and the ejector when inserted?

Hard to fully insert can sometimes be the ejector.

I have had this issue with Ed Brown mags in 45 for my Kimber Custom Two Tone. The mag catch cut outs are actually in different places

Nope, it appears to be the mag release. I’m gonna try a different brand and see how that works. From doing a lot of reading on other forums etc. the Wilsons are awesome in .45 but can be hit or miss sometimes on the 9. But again they still make good stuff.
