No, it's basic geometry. The dot typically sits out of line with the iron sights, even if only slightly, and just aligning it with something four inches in front of it (or less) doesn't work at range.
The video is informative. Math doesn't vary based on opinion.

Have a Crimson Trace Red Dot on my XDM Elite. Took some getting used to, but now I love it! Accurate as can be! I am very cautious (or perhaps cheap) on spending $ on new means and methods. Got it from PSA with a very good sale price.
Have a Viridian Red Dot Laser on my XDE, also accurate. Like this one too. My holster is set up to turn the laser on and off on the draw and re-holstering. Again, got it from Springfield Armory on a very good price! (Actually bought 2, one for a friends XDS. It would not fit the XDS).

I will be jumping into the carry optics myself within the next few weeks. I am putting a Holosun on my S&W compact 3.6 and a Holosun on my Hellcat Pro.

I have found love for the optics. Have mostly Holosun but have an SRO on 2011.
