    Choosing Your First Hunting Rifle

Had been a bow hunter forever, but found myself signed up for an elk hunting trip. I researched enough to narrow the field and went shopping. 300WM checked all my boxes including availability. I knew what I was getting but I didn’t realize how much of it I was getting. The one wise decision I...

Are Gun Shows worth your time?

I walked across town, arrived pretty late and paid nothing to get in. After a few “ You serious Clark’s” I left feeling like I needed a shower and a tumbler of Eagle Rare to wash the experience from my memory. I’d been warned, but the promise of cheap dream catchers and crappy beef jerky was a...

    Whatever happened to....

If semis are unable to move, the letter carriers have nothing to carry. It seems everything must leave town to get sorted so it can come back to town to be delivered. Our carriers are not wilting flowers, -20 check, 10” snow check, assuming the mail made it to town I guess. Herterville is...

How to Layer for Cold Weather

I’ve found that putting layers in my pack is the best policy for me. I perspire like it’s my job, and anytime I start moving I need to remove layers in anticipation. Stopping means putting layers back on pretty soon if I’ve done it correctly. Minnesota can pretty unforgiving come winter.

    Archery people?

Now prices have become asinine. I say that as someone who expects to be shooting game at about 25 yards max on a bad day. If 80 yards is the goal perhaps it takes $1800. I’ll never know.

    No, I don't want a saliva test!

My phone is from a second area code, it certainly helps screen nonsense. By no means a stop, but I’ve got about 1 friend from that area, and seemingly 200 business associates.

    Favorite all time caliber

For current needs the 300WM in a hunting rifle. I could take a .327 Fed in the handgun role.

    Cane For Personal Protection

I picked up a nice Blackthorn cane for dad several years ago. It’s come back to me now. I used it for a couple months after hip replacement. I could get used to it, I look to it every once in awhile when I’m headed to a non permissable environment.

.327 Magnum – A Good Caliber for Defense

I’m a self professed fan boy. I do reload which is richly rewarded. I load the S&W long, H&R mag, and the Fed. This allows three power levels, in easily identifiable cartridge lengths. If I could I’d add a 3” SP-101. I can’t get past the ugly Ruger dipped the LCR in, might taste like fried...

    Window Replacement Advice

This is the advice I took. Got e-glass double pane, and I’m glad I did. That glass has a peculiar tint, I don’t think you would want to mix and match on the same wall. Very effective in the summer. Installation is very important, getting good measurements to begin with most important. While...

Why do people think MIM parts are no good?

Tradition probably has a lot to do with it. I’ll bet the old timers bemoaned the loss of Damascus shotgun barrels.

    Warmest head wear (beanie)?

A beanie is not going to be a serious cold weather hat. Now that has been addressed let’s move on. The Trapper, Mad Bomber, or a hood are the answer to your question. Fashion shouldn’t be a deciding factor if you’re cold. My Trapper is a Badger fur model, I rarely wear it if temperature is...

    Who else loves Kent Rollins?

Does a great job, mixing history with the cooking. I like the “ I’m not saying this is perfect but it’s what I do” delivery. I also find validation for things I’ve done in the past. Like self rising flour and cream to make good enough biscuits for the girls I run with.

What are you prepping for the coming winter storm

French toast fixings, topped off the gas tank and took inventory of the liquor cabinet. Check, check, and check. Just colder than average no snow or ice , except for the lakes, came home this morning to -21.

Was the Atomic Bombing of Japan Necessary?

Too late to ask those who would have been tasked with the job. They were fairly unanimous in their opinion. I can only honor those who were there at the time. This business of second guessing history has gotten out of hand in my opinion. Those living at the time and in the situation were fully...

    Best recommended gun cleaning kit???

Individual components for me when it comes to a dedicated home cleaning kit. No jointed rods on the place, 3 or 4 different rods length and caliber. Jags patches and chemicals as needed. For field use I’ve pretty much defaulted to the Bore Snake and a CLP product.
