OMG I Started A Fight

Because, I posted this on another form and people went crazy. They were talking about how if I never fire my guns how do I know they work?

And one guy says he buys a 50 round box of gold dots every week and shoots the ammunition that's in his gun and reloads it. So he's spending 1500 bucks a year just on self-defense ammunition? If he's buying a box a week.

I mean, how stupid can people get?

Did they know you had the option of popping off rounds in your backyard? Many of us don’t have that option (though I knew you did from your other posts). And yes, I’m jealous 😂!

I usually run one box of 50 HSTs through any new gun I buy to insure reliability (after a couple hundred FMJs). Once I figure it’s reliable, not much sense using lots and lots of HST for target practice. I will run 50 HSTs through a gun about every 3-6 months, which recycles my carry ammo.

On the days I’m not shooting any HST (like this upcoming week) out of my carry gun, I just remove the magazine from the gun (HSTs), eject the round in the gun, then use FMJs. Once I’m done, I reload the carry ammo into the gun, and reholster.

Get home from the range, unload completely in the bedroom, including all rounds out of the magazine, clean gun on dining room table, function check, reload in bedroom, ensuring a different round goes into chamber, then reholster and GTG. I do not unload my carry gun nightly, it is in a safe, loaded, in the event it’s needed.

Even if I wanted to expel my HST carry rounds weekly, one box would last me 3 weeks (15 round magazine x 3) or even 5 weeks (10 round magazine x 5). Probably longer since I don’t always make it to the range weekly. The one magazine would only be if I wanted to extra check reliability for some reason 🤷‍♂️ - nothing to do with age of ammunition - and, if no issues, one magazine should do it. But I don’t want to expel my HST carry rounds weekly, so they’ll last me much, much longer!

Nah, you're not crazy, dumb, wasteful, or ugly. ;)

I will remove the mag and +1 when I take a class or practice with my EDC so that I can shoot cheap(-ish) range fodder. A couple times a year I will shoot that mag+1 of Gold Dot or Sig V-Crown in a training or practice session.

Yeah, I know. We're just a couple of wild and crazy guys.

I'm not surprised nowadays by how stupid people can be never underestimate stupidness.

I cross the IL border 3-4 days/week, and CC is not allowed in IL for non-Illinois-ans (law requires me to un-chamber, remove the magazine, lock gun in glovebox or safe and place the mag in the center console along with the +1 round). Thus I have to unchamber my EDC 3-4 times/week. In order to avoid excessive setback, I need to rotate magazine loads 1/month or so. I guess that's only 100 rounds/year.

Illinois bites that way. For me I’m the total opposite leaving Illinois into another state. I paid over 300 bucks in total for my CCL (150 for the classes and 150 for the actual CCL).

I drive back and forth from Georgia to Wisconsin and back several times a year and ensure all potty breaks and refueling happens before I cross from Indiana into Illinois and I don't stop until I'm across Russell Road in Wisconsin.

Even in the glove box. It was brought up in my CCL class.

Now, now…someone was responsible for producing said daughter, yes? And raising her right? On a more serious note, not jealous about the land, just the ability to step out the back door and practice!

I do sales routes into IL 3-4 days every week. I cross the border and stop at customer's shops 3-9 times each trip. I am not just passing through. Thus what I posted I do is following the law verbatim. I refuse to reload the firearm with each drive from one customer to another...otherwise I'd be re-chambering rounds multiple times each day, and I've posted here before pictures of setback on ammunition of up to 4mm after 5 re-chamberings....big no-no.

Leaving the firearm loaded while locked in the vehicle is a big deal....and your attachment doesn't specifically address that. However, my IL-based co-workers and customers have told me that the firearm must be unloaded when locked-up and secured.

I take my carry ammo out of the magazine probably once a month. I fill the sink with warm water and a healthy dose of Dawn dish soap. Then I use a slotted spoon to whirl the ammo around for a few minutes. I then place a clean, dry sheet of Bounty on the counter and stand each round upright. Once everything is dry, I'll load it back up. If you keep your ammo good and clean, you don't need to rotate it.

What part of Illinois are you entering? I know certain parts of the state I live in are different.
