Formerly operated as a private jet for the Qatari Royal Family, under the registration A7-HBJ, the aircraft was withdrawn from use in 2023 and eventually given the temporary registration P4-HBJ while a new operator was found. Its last activity was a flight on Apr. 3 from Bangor, Maine, to San Antonio, Texas. San Antonio is home to L3Harris Technologies, who have reportedly been contracted to convert the aircraft to the Air Force’s specifications. The arrival of the aircraft last month suggests this process may already have begun.

ETA for the new Air Force One is 2029. I’m not too sure about accepting a plane from anyone in the Middle East 🤔

Wouldn't this gift be considered a bribe? I don't know where, but I thought gifts like this could not be accepted??? Does it stay as government property after DJT leaves office? No, he will not run for a third term.
Don't know if this is an actual law about gifts...
 
While this new 747-8i won't be upgraded to the level of the two new 747-8i VC-25's that Boeing is working on, L3 & the USAF will do some mods & a thorough evaluation of the aircraft (apparently already being done). Nothing will "sneak" through.

It just won't get all the "gold-plating" the the official VC-25s get.

That said, it's a good deal for the taxpayer.

BTW - Qatar plays both sides of the street, and the reason we have the new F-15EX is that Saudi Arabia & Qatar paid for all the new upgrades to the F-15 with their previous F-15SA & F-15QA versions. So, the USA got a great new F-15 with a minimal R&D $$ from the taxpayer.
