Should You Decentralize Your Home Defense System?

June 11th, 2023

Picture this: You’re enjoying an evening at home with the family when you hear a shattering window or a door being thrown open. In an instant, you realize you have a bedside safe and possibly another safe in the home, but nothing within reach. Your options are limited regarding gaining access to a defensive tool within seconds, and everything could be on the line.

Even though it is large enough to hold several rifles, the Vaultek RS200i is still compact and attractive enough to blend into a room.

For me, this is where the Vaultek RS200i comes in. The RS200i is a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-enabled biometric safe that employs state-of-the-art technology to secure firearms while also looking elegant and classy in the home. The RS200i is a rapid access safe that can store multiple long guns or pistols within its modular attachment system.

The Vaultek’s keypad includes a display that provides a quick status update including battery level, if it is locked, and if it is connected to the local network.

Personally, when I am at home, I choose to lock my EDC up so that I can relax, wrestle with the kiddos and be a little more comfortable. But by making this decision, I also need to think about decentralized storage solutions for quick, safe access to my firearms.

Decentralized, What?

What is decentralized storage, and why does it matter? Essentially, it boils down to spreading your defensive tools around your home for quick access rather than only having one safe in a bedroom or a garage. More often than not, those who wish to harm you will have the advantage of surprise and speed. There are many ways to harden our homes to take that advantage away, but we should also consider solutions to have tools at our fingertips when needed.

The Vaultek RS200i can be arranged to hold a number of guns and accessories. In this photo, the author has it set up to hold his SAINT rifle, an XD-M Elite pistol and spare magazines for both.

For my home configuration, I have a safe by the bed, and I have an RS200i in the living room. My downstairs floorplan is a large U-shape, so the RS200i lives directly in the center of the downstairs. This way I can quickly access the safe from cover no matter the entry point into my home.

In addition to a defensive rifle, the Vaultek can safely store pistols for personal protection.

For rapid and secure access, the RS200i utilizes a keypad or biometric scanning. The RS200i measures 50” x 14” x 7.5”. The modular interior can easily hold a rifle, pistol and magazines with room to spare. I chose to store a SAINT AR-15 and an XD-M Elite, four AR-15 magazines and two XD-M magazines. This is more than enough to handle any threats that may enter my home.

What’s more, the Vaultek RS200i gives me the peace of mind that if my safe was accessed without my knowledge, I would receive a notification on my phone saying the safe was bumped or opened. This is a fantastic feature, especially living with kiddos. If, by chance, the safe is bumped or left open too long, the safe begins to sound an alarm to ward off any tampering. Additionally, the RS200i comes with a back-up key that can be used to open the safe at any time should the battery become depleted.

Fitting In

The RS200i has a smart and intuitive way of customizing how you store your firearms in the safe. By utilizing magnets and holes, you simply insert your accessories’ pegs into the specific holes, which are retained by strong magnets. The abundance and placement of the attachment points give you the freedom to mix and match, move and maximize your storage to fit your needs.

using the vaultek rs200i
Vaultek includes a rapid-access fingerprint scanner on the keypad. The scan pad is located just below the keys.

When setting up the RS200i, you can either install the freestanding base or, using the small cut-outs in the rear of the safe, secure the safe to the wall using the included screws. I opted to permanently install the safe into the wall for a cleaner look as well as being more secure. Since the RS200i is a compact and slim safe, you must do one of the two methods, or the safe will tip forward once opened.

The set-up was a breeze, and using the app I was able to connect my RS200i to my Wi-Fi network to begin monitoring from my cell phone. I really enjoy the look of the safe prominently displayed in the middle of my home. The finish and the classy, techy look fit perfectly with the décor of my home.

Conclusion

I’ve been searching for some time now for a perfect decentralized storage solution, and the Vaultek RS200i fits the bill perfectly. I have much more peace of mind around the house knowing that in an instant I can defend myself and my family from harm. I am also thankful to live in a country where that is still possible, and to keep it that way, we must all be good examples and stewards of the Second Amendment. Normalize gun ownership, lift others up, be encouraging, and most importantly, carry a firearm and get professional training.
