XS Sights R3D 2.0 Review

I’ve been a big fan of tritium night sights for a long time. Any time I test a new every day carry (EDC) pistol, the first questions I ask are: Does it come with tritium night sights, or can I easily find an aftermarket set for it?

For an EDC pistol, sights matter. A good trigger is great. A reliable magazine is essential. But when the lighting drops and a target becomes harder to see, your ability to quickly acquire your sights can make all the difference.

When I picked up the Springfield Armory Echelon 4.5F, I immediately started running it in training. It wasn’t a “shoot it once and put it away” kind of gun. I was taking it to every training session I could fit into my schedule. The more I shot it, the more I liked it.

From the factory, the Echelon 4.5F comes with an excellent tritium front night sight and a white U-notch rear sight. The front sight is easy to find, and the rear U-notch makes alignment quick and intuitive. However, I love to tweak/modify my firearms, so I thought a full set of tritium sights could be interesting.

This project launched my search for an aftermarket set of sights for my Echelon. I’ve used XS Sights products in the past, and I’ve always had good experiences with their quality and performance. So naturally, I went straight to their website to see what they had available.

That’s when I noticed the XS Sights R3D 2.0 Tritium Night Sights.

I was already familiar with XS Sights as a company, and I knew they made durable, well-designed pistol sights. Still, I’m always interested in testing newer designs — especially if they offer benefits in visibility, speed and overall practicality for defensive use.

First Impressions and Features

XS Sights describes the R3D 2.0 as a next-generation night sight system designed to work in both low light and daylight conditions.

The front sight features a tritium vial surrounded by a high-contrast “Glow Dot.” That Glow Dot is essentially a bright ring around the tritium insert that absorbs ambient light and continues to glow when lighting conditions dim. XS Sights doesn’t call it a “donut,” but if we’re being honest that’s the simplest way to describe what you’re seeing.

The rear sight includes two tritium vials and a wide notch designed for fast alignment. The result is a classic notch-and-post sight picture that feels natural and quick to acquire.

Another standout feature of the rear sight is its “blackout” serrated face. That texture reduces glare and helps keep your focus on the front sight, exactly where it belongs. It’s a small detail, but it matters — especially when shooting in bright conditions where glare can become a real distraction.

The rear sight also includes a ledge designed for one-handed slide manipulations. In my opinion, this is a feature that should be present on every defensive pistol sight. Whether you’re clearing a malfunction, performing a one-handed reload or working around an injury, that ledge gives you a practical way to manipulate the slide using your belt, holster or another rigid surface.

The R3D 2.0 sights are CNC machined and finished in black nitride for durability. They’re also manufactured in-house at the XS Sights facility in Fort Worth, Texas.

Options and Fitment for the Echelon

XS Sights offers a few different versions of the R3D 2.0 line for a wide range of pistols, including different Glow Dot colors of green or orange and standard or suppressor sight heights. However, the models currently available for the Echelon series are only offered with a green Glow Dot and standard height.

Personally, I prefer green, so that worked out perfectly for me. That said, I know plenty of shooters who prefer orange for faster daytime visibility. I’d also expect suppressor-height options to become available eventually, especially with the growing popularity of red-dot optics and co-witness setups.

Installation: DIY or Professional?

One feature XS Sights highlights is the ease of installation. They describe the R3D 2.0 sights as “DIYer Install Rated,” which immediately caught my attention.

I’ll be the first to admit: I’ve had my share of sight installation horror stories. Even with a high-quality sight pusher like the one from MGW I have, I’ve managed to damage sights in the past. If you’ve ever crushed a rear sight, scratched a slide or sent a front sight drifting sideways mid-install, you know exactly what I mean.

XS Sights offers two installation options:

1. They ship the sights to your house and you install them yourself.
2. You ship them your slide and have the sights professionally installed.

Since I own more than one Echelon, I decided to try both routes.

For professional installation, I sent XS Sights the slide from my full-size Echelon 4.5F. The turnaround time was impressive. From the moment I shipped it out, they received it, installed the sights, and had it back in the mail within just a few days.

For my DIY test, I installed a second set on a compact Echelon 4.0C.

The install process was straightforward. Having a proper sight pusher makes the job faster and easier, and I recommend it over using a hammer and punch whenever possible. That said, you don’t need to spend a fortune. There are plenty of reasonably priced sight pushers that get the job done.

If you prefer the hammer-and-punch method, XS Sights also sells a Delrin sight punch. That’s a smart option because it’s safer for the sight finish than steel, brass or aluminum punches.

XS Sights also built a few features into the R3D 2.0 design to make installation easier. The rear sight includes both a “Lead-In” edge and an “EasyPress” crush zone. The front sight includes the Lead-In edge as well.

Those small engineering choices really do matter. In practice, it meant the sights pressed in cleanly and smoothly without unnecessary stress or struggling.

The set I installed myself ended up being one of the easiest sight installations I’ve done — and that’s saying something considering how many I’ve struggled with over the years.

Range Testing

As soon as I got my Echelon 4.5F slide back from XS Sights, I reassembled everything and headed to the range.

Although I normally run an optic on my Echelon 4.5F, I removed it for part of this review. Since this was specifically about low-light iron sight performance, I wanted to keep the test focused and fair.

Before I get into results, it’s worth addressing a common misconception about “night sights.”

Some shooters assume night sights are designed to be used in total darkness. Technically, tritium sights will glow in complete darkness, but firearm safety tells us we should always be able to identify our target and understand what’s in front of it, and what’s behind it.

Engaging a target you can’t clearly see is never a good idea.

My first test was done in a true low-light environment. My friends at C2 Tactical in Scottsdale gave me access to a bay where I could control the lighting.

With all ambient lights turned off, I set a single light source behind me. It dimly illuminated the target, which was placed at roughly 7 yards.

Using only that minimal backlighting and the three tritium references (one front, two rear), I fired 10 rounds. All 10 landed cleanly in the 9, 10, and X ring of a bullseye target.

That told me what I needed to know: these sights weren’t just visible — they were usable.

After that, I swapped to a Gunsite target at the same distance and ran a few drills with full range lighting. I wanted to confirm that the sights were still quick to acquire under normal conditions.

They were.

Presentation after presentation, my sight acquisition stayed fast and consistent, and I never felt like the sights were slowing me down.

For my final test, I headed outdoors to an outdoor range just north of my house. My goal was to see how the R3D 2.0 sights performed under harsh, bright sunlight.

I set up steel at 10, 15, and 25 yards and started working through strings of fire. The result was simple: hits came easy, and the front Glow Dot stayed visible and easy to track. I honestly don’t think I missed a single plate.

Conclusions

Let’s start with installation.

The set I installed myself was the easiest set of pistol sights I’ve installed to date. And trust me, I’ve struggled with enough sights over the years to appreciate when a company designs a system that installs cleanly without drama.

As for the professional installation service, the turnaround time was outstanding. Their pricing is reasonable, the work is clean, and the speed is impressive — something you don’t always see in the firearms world.

Now for performance.

The XS Sights R3D 2.0 performed exactly as advertised. I tested them in low light, in a well-lit indoor environment, and in bright outdoor sunlight. In every condition, they were easy to acquire, fast to align, and accurate in practical shooting.

If you’re looking to modify your Springfield Armory Echelon with a set of full tritium night sights like these, I believe the XS Sights R3D 2.0 deserves a spot at the top of your list. MSRP is $152.99, as tested.
