5 Reasons — TRP 6 inch 10mm for Home Defense

April 5th, 2019

Most readers living The Armory Life don’t need someone to explain the reasons why you might own a firearm. However, many of us are open to considering new guns to add to our collections.

So, let me enable you just a bit with five solid reasons for picking up the Springfield Armory TRP 6″ 10mm pistol for home defense.

[Be sure to get a look at the new Springfield Armory TRP series.]

It’s a Pistol

As a pistol, it’s compact, easy to maneuver and requires a single hand to use. Your other hand can be calling the police, closing and locking interior doors or wrestling an opponent away.

In this photo, the author is shooting a Springfield Armory, Inc. M1911 semi-automatic pistol chambered for the 10mm Auto with one hand. Flames are seen exiting the barrel muzzle.

You should never clear your house, but most home invasions take place in the afternoon. You may be retreating and hiding and have to maneuver through doorways. You may also be moving to meet the threat to protect your loved ones. If you can, you should also be calling the police.

A free hand makes this all possible and the TRP 10mm only takes one hand to operate. The single-stack design ensures people with average-sized hands can still easily and comfortably grip a 10mm. A 10mm double stack is much thicker and harder to shoot one-handed.

The Long Slide and Barrel

The long slide and barrel of the 6-inch model offer numerous advantages, especially with proper 10mm defensive loads. The barrel is fully supported so the TRP Operator can handle the round the 10mm is designed to be.

In this photograph, the author shows us his M1911 style pistol with an attached Streamlight TRL-1 HL firearm mounted flashlight.

The longer barrel and slide slow the slide down which aids in longevity when practicing with proper 10mm ammo. Additionally, the extra weight of that extra inch helps keep muzzle rise down as well as recoil. This combination of features makes it capable of handling the powerful 10mm round safely and comfortably.

Potent Caliber

We’ve mentioned the power of the 10mm round, and it should not be ignored. The 10mm is a powerful little guy, a mighty fellow that was the brainchild of brilliant engineers and a prominent firearms trainer.

In this image, we see a 10mm Auto cartridge. We see the brass case and primer along with the printed head stamp information.

A lot of loads out there are watered down to resemble something closer to a 40 S&W. However, a few companies are producing proper 10mm loads, and others are creating some real fireballs. I’d stick with factory loaded ammo designed to something close to Norma specs. The Speer Gold Dot 200 Grain Gold Dot is pretty close, as is the Federal HST personal protection ammo.

These calibers penetrate very well and are topped with 10mm projectiles designed to expand when they hit soft flesh. Combine the two features with proper shot placement, and you have a powerhouse of a handgun. The TRP is a big, heavy gun that makes these man stoppers easy to handle.

A Rail for a Light

While most home invasions and burglaries happen during the day, some will inevitably occur at night. The TRP Operator is a railed gun that allows you to easily mount your favorite light or laser or a combination of both.

Here we see the front of the author's handgun. We can see the muzzle, forward slide serrations, trigger and flashlight bezel.

A white light is a must-have for home defense in my humble opinion. It gives you the ability to identify a threat before pulling the trigger. This adheres to gun safety rules and ensures you remain on the right side of the law.

The author demonstrates the blinding power of a bright flashlight in a self-defense situation.

The difference between shooting a bad guy and a teen sneaking back into the house is a white light away. Take a look at the SureFire X300U for one of the best on the market today.

Night Sights

The TRP Operator comes with Trijicon night sights that are adjustable. For home defense, we are looking more at how the sights glow than how they adjust. Night sights are perfect for a home defense gun because they are ready to go 24/7.

In this image, the night sights are glowing a bright green making them easy to see and align.

After sundown is not the only time night sights are handy. When the sun is just rising or setting, or if you like to keep your home a little darker, then night sights are for you. They glow in low light conditions of all kinds and allow you to have a point of focus.

In daylight conditions, the rear sight offers a sharp, crisp notch for the front sight to align in.

That Home Defense Game

The one weakness of this pistol would be the relatively low-capacity magazines. This is a sacrifice you have to make with a single stack design. It’s a bit of a blessing and a curse. As a single stack, it’s thinner and easier to handle, but this gives you less ammo overall.

In this photo, the author shows us his 6" Springfield Armory TRP 10mm pistol with PPU ammo.

The Springfield TRP Operator in 10mm with a 6-inch barrel is two things. First, a mouthful to describe. Second, a potent, smooth-shooting gun that combines a variety of features to be a rock-solid addition to your home defense gear.
